Straw Tower Activity- 2 day activity for team building and developing norms for effective and productive student collaboration

Day 2-
Groups watch 2 minute clips of collaborative groups working on a project.  Using guiding questions and discussion they will work together to list norms/behaviors that a group must adhere to or demonstrate in order for the group to work productively.
Group suggestions will be discussed and an agreed upon set of behaviors will be posted and guide collaborative activities for the rest of the year.

Straw Tower Activity—2 day activity for team building and developing norms for effective and productive student collaboration

Materials         Each group gets

30 straws bundled with a rubber band

1 meter of masking tape

Activity Day 1

Students should be seated in groups of 3-4.  Give the directions for this activity and then provide students 20-30 minutes to complete their towers.  (Make sure to time the activity)

Students will work collaboratively to create a straw tower using only the materials provided.  They have to create free-standing towers (meaning the towers cannot be taped to desks or staying upright by leaning on a table/wall or use the ceiling).  They only get the tape provided, if they mess up the tape (get it stuck together) they do not get any more, they need to be careful.  Prizes will be awarded for 2 categories:  best design and tallest free-standing tower.
