Real or Imaginary?  Man Made Numbers

Essential Question:  How can we express the zeros of a quadratic function if it never touches the real x-axis?

Content Objectives:  The students will be able to...

  • define and use imaginary and complex numbers
  • solve quadratic equations with complex roots
  • identify the real number system and it's families
Language Objective:  The students will be able to explain what mathematical situation inspired imaginary numbers to be invented.

Key Terms:  imaginary unit, imaginary number, complex number, real part, imaginary part, complex conjugate, DesCartes, pure imaginary numbers, Heron of Alexandria
